Movement & MS

We’ve all heard it – exercise is helpful for any health condition, including MS. When I started to write this post, I realized I had amassed no less than a dozen different articles about different exercises that could be beneficial for MS.

We’re all different – MS is called a snowflake disease. And, I am about 100% positive we all don’t like the same kind of exercise either; like may not be the right word, as it’s often what our bodies have the ability to do at that one time.

Do you move your body every day in some way? As I’ve gotten healthier and stronger, the forms of exercise I do have changed somewhat. But, there are some forms of stretching, stimulation and moving that you can do even if your legs are not feeling very steady…everything that I offer in class can be done in a chair, and I can even modify it if you feel you need to lie down — tapping and focused breathing can be done in any position. I hope you will come try a class soon!

Keeping the thought that we all like different forms of exercise from time to time, I’m in favor of helping everyone with MS find the best form of movement and exercise for them. So, when my friend Carol, fellow MS activist and student when she is able to attend class, reached out to me about a chair yoga class she was planning to offer to anyone with MS, I was happy to share resources in hopes that we will both find ways to help more people. Here’s more about Carol – her class will be on Tuesdays at 12:30 pm on the same Zoom link.

Gentle Chair Yoga will be taught by Carol Wallis, a 200 hour Yoga International Certified Yoga teacher who specializes in Chair Yoga. She is currently teaching yoga at the local YMCA’s and volunteers once a week with Rosewood Nursing Home. Carol was diagnosed with MS in 2006, the same year she discovered yoga. She has been practicing yoga on a regular basis since and is committed to sharing the benefits she has seen from yoga with as many people as possible.

We hope to see you in class soon! Keep moving!
